A focal point in our family room is this bank of nine chicken nesting boxes. I like to change it out for the seasons. This month I have filled it with some bears, Halloween cats, some autumn leaves, pumpkins, etc. These are just some pieces from my collection – some artist pieces, some manufactured things, and some antiques that I have put together in a pleasing arrangement. I repeated the leaves and multi-colored baskets along with the color orange to tie it all together. Most of the bears also wear witch hats.
In the bottom left corner are three bears in a basket by Patti’s Paw Prints, Terri Larson, and Diane Kennedy. I got the little witch hats on sale at JoAnn’s Fabrics. I put books in the middle nest just to break things up. The bottom right corner houses an older Wendi Meagher bear wearing a witch hat and holding a pumpkin. An LED puck light illuminates her face at night and she is sitting on a doll quilt that spills out of the nest box.
From left to right in the middle row are a little bear by Roxann Propp wearing an autumn candle ring halo and sharing her nest with a big pumpkin, a black bear by Sherry Shepherdson who holds a lighted jack o’ lantern, and a dapper black cat by Janny Peterson.
The top row holds a funny soft sculpture pumpkin with a painted face that I got on a road trip to the Amana Colonies with Linda Dorr. Whitey the Steiff Teddy Baby plays the part of a ghost in the middle nest with an autumn hued vintage doll quilt, and a purchased black cat treat box looks out of the last box. On top is a Halloween sign by Iowa artist Jami Boldy.
Beside the chicken nests, I’ve placed a Halloween feather tree being admired by a cute little girl bear in a peach dress named Penny by Joel Hoy. She looks so much like her maker, I have to smile when I see her!
